The Clockmaker’s Apprentice
Section 1
In the village of Eldermere, where the cobblestones whispered secrets to those who walked slowly, there lived a clockmaker named Elias. His shop, The Eternal Tick, was a place where time itself seemed to pause. Clocks of all shapes and sizes lined the walls, their pendulums swinging in quiet unison.
Elias had one rule: no one was to touch the clock in the back room. It was an ancient thing, its face made of silver and its hands carved from bone. The villagers said it didn’t tell time—it collected it.
One autumn evening, a girl named Mara knocked on the shop door. She was small for her age, with hands that were always stained with ink or dirt. "I need work," she said. "I can sweep the floors."
Elias studied her for a long moment. Then, without a word, he handed her a broom.
